Two recent WebCasts were added to the archive available for on-demand
viewing:

120 MB in size. (Don't try that over dialup!) We expect to replace
the downloadable movies with normal sized movies (30 MB) the week
of June 28th.

NOTE - Date & time change...
Come attend a presentation at MacWORLD
SF 2004, on Mac OS X File System maintenance with two members
of the macosxlabs project, Kevin Boyd of University of Michigan;
and Richard Glaser of University of Utah.
Here is a chance to get an in-depth look at tools, tips, and techniques
for managing files in OSX. We will focus on two lab management
tools - Radmind and RsyncX. These tools can be used in a variety
of scenarios: Initial installs of loadsets onto machines; protecting
the integrity of loadsets in a lab or enterprise environment; deploying
applications across the network to multiple machines; managing
user backups of personal files either locally or across the network.
Questions will be fielded as they arise - this is an opportunity
to share your thoughts and experiences in this area as well.

Blast
Away -- Is OS X Really Secure?
Come attend a presentation at MacWORLD
SF 2004, on Mac OS X Security with a member of the macosxlabs
project, Philip Rinehart of Yale University; and Jeff "Wolverine" Greene
of University of Colorado at Boulder.
With the advent of many attacks against Windows machines, is Macintosh
OS X really secure? In this session, we will examine the default
security of an OS X machine. Is it resistant to network attacks,
and what types of local exploits can be used to compromise a machine?
An overview, and demonstration of techniques to make an OS X box
more secure, and how to do basic forensic analysis will be presented.
Attendees will learn: What OS X (including Panther) is vulnerable
to, and how to I fix it; Why physical security is important and
what forensic tools are available to analyze a compromised machine.

about upgrading firmware using writeable & non-writeable
volumes.

|
| 5.22.02 |
Integrating
Mac OS X & Novell eDirectory - This document describes
how you can use information stored in Novell's eDirectory to
authenticate Macintosh users, provide file services and home
directories for them, from a NetWare 6 server. It also includes
example LDIF files to extend the eDirectory schema, updating
users, and adding a mount organizational unit and mount object
class.
|
| 5.22.02 |
Imaging
with ASR & NetBoot - To achieve near-full automation
of imaging and re-imaging of Mac OS X you can use ASR & NetBoot
with AppleScript. Place the AppleScript into the "Startup
Items" folder in your NetBoot HD image to have ASR use
a particular image on your machines depending on their IP addresses.
For example, we have five different labs, and some of the labs
will have two to four Mac OS X ASR images (open-area, staff,
lab kiosk, public kiosk etc.). Without AppleScript, one would
have to manually select which image to run on a machine.
This documentation gives overview of setup, tips on NetBoot setup
and customization and AppleScript to automate the process.
|
| 5.10.02 |
ByHost
Renamer Script - A shell script has been added to the
documentation that can be used to rename the ByHost folder
files whose file names contain sections that are specific to
the master image source. To use this script, copy it from the
browser window and paste it into your favorite text editor
(i.e. BBEDit, Terminal and pico, etc.). You will need to make
sure it is saved Unix returns and has execute privileges.
This script can be run at login via LoginHook after initial imaging
or re-imaging.
|
| 5.7.02 |
RsyncX 1.0 -
RsyncX 1.0 has been released with source code and can be distributed
freely. Fixes included moving to 2.5.5 code base released on 4/2/2002,
added folder icon info support and fixed date created bug.
This utility is an implementation of rsync with HFS+ support and
GUI application.

Impact Survey -
We've created a survey to determine what effect the Higher Education
Mac OS X Lab Deployment Initiative has had on your campus. We're
hoping it's had a positive influence on the process of moving to
Mac OS X and/or your commitment to Macs. However, we won't know unless
